Port
Arthur Historic Site: Port Arthur is the
pre-eminent symbol of the convict system in 19th century
Australia. Begun in 1830 with timber constructions,
the site was chosen because the narrow neck of land
up the road at Eaglehawk Neck made it easy to cut
off escapees. Guided walking tours of the site are
available or you can wander through the ruins of the
penitentiary, the church and more at your leisure,
soaking in the atmosphere. Other buildings, such as
the Model Prison with its chapel of individual cubicles
for prisoners, and staff houses are set up as museums.
In summer, the price of admission includes a harbour
cruise. By day you can enjoy the park setting, by
night, take a lantern-lit ghost tour of the site.
